Mining Journal’s inaugural paper on mine closure in 2020 focused on the importance of planning early in mine life for the social and environmental impacts of closure.

This report focuses on how sentiment on mine closure has changed in the past three years, in light of the increasing focus within the mining sector on ESG-related issues.

The impact of the ICMM Integrated Mine Closure Good Practice Guide (published in 2019), ISO mine closure and reclamation planning document (2021) and other guidelines on how mine operators and developers are approaching mine closure.

The technologies and innovations mine operators and developers are adopting to best prepare for closure, and recent examples of best practice on closure.

Watch our expert panel discuss the changing paradigm of mine closure; perspectives of post-mining land users and regulators, when is the right time to agree post mining land use, how post-mining land use helps to manage and mitigate mining legacies, possible pathways for transition to an agreed post-mining land use and what is currently preventing engagement of post-mining land users.

The 50-company sample was pulled from respondents across management levels in positions of mining engineers and above. The research aimed to gain an understanding of various dynamics associated with mine closure today, including multi-stakeholder interests, closure priorities, key performance indices, impact of climate change, adequacy of regulation, and the extent to which available technologies were being brought to bear.
